All projects submitted for judging were an improvement or an addition to an existing structure. An impartial panel of judges who are experts within the industry and associated fields, selected winners based on each entrant’s binders, which include “before and after” photography and project descriptions. Judging focused on problem solving, functionality, aesthetics, craftsmanship, innovation, degree of difficulty and entry presentation.

To be considered for a CotY Award, a company must be a NARI member in good standing. The entries making up this year’s competition totaled $93 million in remodeling projects. NARI members represent an elite group of the approximately 800,000 companies and individuals in the U.S. identifying themselves as remodelers.

Initially constructed in the 1970’s, the Owners of this home had lived here for about 9 years. They loved their lakeside property but decided that the time had come to create an exterior that would possess a presence from both the streetside and lakeside that would instill an enduring sense of pride in their family homestead. The desire was to create a home that was inviting and graceful without becoming imposing or extravagant.

The roofline, the boxy footprint and the dreary exterior appearance were the major design issues that needed to be addressed. These were overcome by building over the existing roof with a much more substantial structure, altering the footprint in strategic locations and employing architecturally integrated design. Use of high quality materials, such as 50-year asphalt shingles, copper roof elements, new windows and custom made brackets and flower boxes helped to achieve the desired result.

The renovation of the front entry created an impressive yet casual presence.

The construction of a lakeside porch with operable screens allows full views and enjoyment of lake activities.
